National Retrofit Centre Wins Public Sector Project of the Year
The National Retrofit Centre, based at the BE-ST Innovation Campus within Hamilton International Technology Park, has been named Public Sector Project of the Year at the 2025 Energy Saving Awards.
The award recognises the successful transformation of an existing industrial building into a national centre for retrofit innovation, delivered by BE-ST with support from the Scottish Government’s Public Sector Heat Decarbonisation Fund. The project demonstrates how buildings within established business parks can be upgraded to meet modern sustainability and net zero standards.
The refurbishment adopts a fabric first approach, improving insulation and airtightness while introducing a zero direct emissions heating system. This combines air source and ground source heat pumps with solar energy, supported by solar PV, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and smart energy controls, removing the need for gas heating and significantly reducing carbon emissions.
Delivered by Clark Contracts with a team of specialist design and engineering partners, the project forms part of the first phase of refurbishment across the BE-ST Innovation Campus. It reinforces Hamilton International Technology Park’s role as a hub for low-carbon innovation, skills development and sustainable growth.
Now operating as a live demonstration facility, the National Retrofit Centre supports training, research and knowledge sharing, helping businesses and the wider construction sector to accelerate the transition to a low carbon built environment.
